Mondays, and why the door stays shut
Shears go to the sharpener, the suites are stripped to the frame, and nobody touches a dog. It is the most productive day of our week.
Six days a week this building smells of warm coat and cedar. On Mondays it smells of vinegar and hot metal, and there is not a dog in it.
What happens
Every pair of shears comes off the bench and goes into the box for the sharpener, who collects at ten. We run thirty-one pairs and they go out on a rota, so nothing is ever cut with a blade that has quietly gone dull without anyone deciding it had.
The suites are stripped to the frame — beds, rugs, the lot — washed at sixty, and the floors go back to bare wood and sealer. Drying room filters out, blowers apart, motors blown through. The bench gets its cutting mat replaced if the month has a first Monday in it.
And the coat notes from the week get typed up. Every dog that came through gets a line in its file: what the coat did, what we found, what to watch. That file is the reason a groomer who has never met your dog can pick up its appointment in eighteen months and know that the left ear is the sore one.
Why not open
Because every one of those jobs is the kind that gets deferred forever if there is a dog waiting. Shears get sharpened next week. The filter gets done when there’s a gap. The notes get written from memory on Thursday, badly.
We tried it the other way for the first eleven months. The blades went dull, the notes stopped, and by the following spring we had a drying room running at about seventy per cent of the airflow it was built for, which nobody noticed because it had happened by degrees.
The cost of it
A sixth of our possible revenue, more or less. Most weeks that feels like a lot of money to spend on tidiness, and roughly four times a year something happens on a Monday — a motor that had started to whine, a stitched seam going in a coat we made in 2023, a note in a file that catches a recurring ear infection nobody had joined up — that pays for the whole year of them at once.
The door says Closed Mondays. Sharpening and stripping. People assume it’s a joke about terriers. It is half a joke about terriers.
